Tikanga & Conduct

  • The marae is a wāhi tapu (sacred place). Respectful behaviour is expected at all times.

  • Follow the guidance of marae representatives and kaumātua.

  • Children must be supervised by adults at all times.

  • Any damage or incidents must be reported immediately.
     

Tangihanga

  • As a marae, tangihanga may take place at any time.

  • Tangihanga will always take precedence over other bookings.

  • If a booking is affected, you will be notified as early as possible and a full refund will be provided.
     

Pōwhiri & Marae Protocol

  • Formal welcomes (pōwhiri) may be required depending on the kaupapa.

  • Visitors are expected to respect pōwhiri processes, including:

    • Karanga and whaikōrero

    • Waiata tautoko

  • Guidance will be provided if you are unfamiliar with marae protocol.

  • Failure to remove rubbish may result in an additional cleaning fee.

Marae Guidelines
Whāngārā Marae is a place of deep cultural, spiritual, and ancestral significance. All visitors are expected to act with respect and care at all times.

Wharenui (Meeting House)

  • No food or drink inside the wharenui.

  • Shoes must be removed before entering.

  • Treat carvings, tukutuku, and taonga with respect at all times.

  • Sleeping arrangements must follow marae guidance.
     

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drugs are strictly prohibited on marae grounds, including carparks and the urupā.

  • Alcohol is only permitted with prior approval and under strict conditions.

  • Smoking and vaping are only allowed in designated areas.

Responsibility

  • The person making the booking is responsible for:

    • The behaviour of all attendees

    • Any damage to marae property

    • Ensuring tikanga and guidelines are followed
